I’m certain if you’ve seen that I’ve written a whole series of fantasy regency romance, you might ask yourself that very question. Or, you might simply wonder if Kal has lost his mind.
Well, this one is a two part answer, and they’re both relatively simple.
My wife got diagnosed with cancer the day after Christmas back in 2024. As you might imagine, that’s a significant emotional event. She’s doing well, now, but things were pretty rough. In the middle of all of that, she told me she wanted me to write a romance novel for her.
This isn’t the sort of request one can idly ignore. So I thought a lot about it and tried to figure out what I could write.
The second half is that I’ve enjoyed regency stories, the likes of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer since I was in high school. Regency romances are different from a lot of other romances, in my opinion, as the dialogue and interactions have to do so much more of the lifting. The male leads are often more developed, I think, as a result.
Fuse those two facts together, and the fact that I write Science Fiction and Fantasy, and you have the why of it. So I created a world where emotions fuel magic, and where the strongest emotions of all, love and hate, fuel it the strongest. Where families with powerful bloodlines seek to marry their children with other powerful bloodlines to increase their power still more.
And I wrote the first words about the five Priddington girls, newly arrived to the Capitol and Society: Prudence, Patricia, Persephone, Peasley and Paisley. Each of them have their own novel, their own story, all of them interconnected with the others.
My wife has enjoyed the books, which is the most important part of it for me. I’ve enjoyed writing them, too, because they’re fun, though I’ve had to do a maddening amount of research on fabrics, dresses, regency etiquette, townhouse floorplans, color matching, and more.
I hope you enjoy the books as well. The first is available 2 October, 2026 and is up for preorder now. https://amzn.to/46EoAOH
