Free Short Stories

Because of Myths and Legends Con in Denver this weekend I’ll have Look to the Stars and The Freeport Mutineers available for free.

Mason McGann is a smuggler, a liar, and a cheat. With his ship impounded by customs, he figures he has no choice left but to auction off information about the lost Dreyfus Fleet. But things are never what they seem when you hold information that can change the course of history.

The Freeport Mutineers, by Kal Spriggs
The Freeport Mutineers, by Kal Spriggs

Young Midshipman Wachter is about to face the rope.

Troubled by the rumors spread throughout the Southern Fleet, the young officer turned to the Marines and Sailors under his command… yet he and they were betrayed, arrested, and convicted of mutiny, all under the orders of the ambitious Lord Admiral Hennings.

Faced with the prospect of not only his own death, but that of the men under his command, Wachter must somehow find a way to do the right thing. Yet there is little hope with he and his men jailed, weaponless, and condemned, while the town of Freeport lies under martial law and the threat of dark sorcery.

Only one course lays open to him, to break his oaths and to swear allegiance to the cause of another, to become exactly what his enemies have accused him of being: a mutineer.

Kal’s October 2015 Forecast

October is here and I’m happy to greet it.  It’s been a busy past couple months, with a lot of writing and a lot of editing and trying to meet deadlines, plus a convention thrown in for good measure.  So October is here and… yeah, more writing, more editing, and more deadlines.  Oh, and a convention.

I’m working on Fate of the Tyrant, Book III of the Eoriel Saga.  It is a big book for me, since this is concluding the fight over the Duchy of Masov between Lady Katarina Emberhill and Lord Hector the Usurper.  Needless to say, there’s going to be a few fights.

Later this month (23-25 October) I’ll be attending Mile Hi Con in Denver.  I don’t yet have a schedule for my panels, but I’ll be trying to find some table space for signings and I hope to see some people there.  Colorado conventions are always awesome, so if you’re in the area, you should definitely attend.

In other news, Odin’s Eye, sequel to Fenris Unchained, will be coming out later this month.  I don’t have the exact date, yet, but my publisher is trying to line things up to tie the release in with Mile Hi Con, so hopefully I’ll be showing off the new book at the convention!

I’m also trying to line up a book signing tour for the release of Odin’s Eye and The Prodigal Emperor.  It will probably be mostly local, but if you’re interested, let me know here.

One more reminder, don’t forget to subscribe to my newsletter to automatically enter to win a signed copy of The Prodigal Emperor!

That’s all for now, thanks for reading!

Kal’s August 2015 Forecast

Things are pretty busy for me right now, let me tell you. I’m doing the final edits for The Prodigal Emperor, with the publication date projected at 18 September 2015. This will be the third book of the Shadow Space Chronicles and it ties the story of Lucius Giovanni’s war with the Chxor Empire to a close. I’ll have The Prodigal Emperor available for pre-order sometime in the next couple of weeks.

I’m also working on a novel for Henchman Press, the Eye of Odin, which will be the sequel to Fenris Unchained. My goal is to have the book finished by the end of the month, though the publication date will be sometime near the end of the year, I understand.

Lastly, I’m also working on the next set of Renegades stories. This series has close ties to the Shadow Space Chronicles but is more focused on a small team of misfits rather than large-scale military operations. My goal is to have Renegades: Out of the Cold finished by the end of September.

I’m also outlining the next Eoriel Saga book, Fate of the Tyrant and getting the audiobook for Wrath of the Usurper ready to to go live. The narrator, Eric Dove, did an amazing job of it and I can’t wait for people to be able to listen to it.

Lastly, the July Newsletter went out on Friday, July 31st. If you signed up but didn’t receive your email, please check your spam filter. I’ve also sent out the T-shirts from the winners who contacted me as well as the signed copy of Wrath of the Usurper. If you missed out on those contests, don’t worry, there will be more giveaways, so sign up for my newsletter today!

That’s all for now. Thanks for reading!

Drat, Foiled Again…

Well, if you’ve noticed the dead silence around here, there’s a reason: my laptop computer died.  And by died, I mean it went completely non-recoverable, complete flatline, OS not found.  Fortunately I don’t save any of my writing files on my hard drive.  Unfortunately, my ancient notebook isn’t capable of running much more than a word document and my desktop computers aren’t great for traveling, which I was doing a lot of at the time.

So, as you can imagine, I haven’t been able to do much writing for blog posts or updating here.  My monthly newsletter, of which the first will go out in only a couple days, will be out on time.  I had a nicely written review for Ant Man, but that I had saved on the hard drive, and since it’s been out this long, I’ll just say I had a lot of fun.

I have a release date planned for The Prodigal Emperor, but I’m waiting to hear back on little things like the cover, so I’m not going to make it public just yet.  Subscribers to the newsletter will get an exclusive first look at the first two chapters.  Also, subscribers this month get a chance to win a signed copy of Wrath of the Usurper.  Don’t miss out and sign up today!

That’s all for now, I promise to be back online as soon.  Thanks for reading!

Echo of the High Kings Book Bomb Reminder

Just a quick reminder that the Echo of the High Kings book bomb will occur on the 11th of October. As part of this, I’m also doing a giveaway for those who buy the book and post a review (because I can’t tell who bought it otherwise) by the 15th of November.  I’ll randomly pick three of the reviewers as the winners. The three winners will receive either a signed paperback copy of Echo of the High Kings, an audiobook, or a spot in my next book.

In Eoriel, the High Kings are legend: rulers who once stood against the darkness and ruled the world for two thousand turns of peace and prosperity. In the long turns since their fall during the Sundering, Eoriel’s civilization has faded. Dark men and darker beings have torn down and destroyed the old works. While some have held out against the grind of history, other places have been reduced to primitive tribes of savages, worshiping dark spirits and demons as their gods. Yet a spark of hope remains. Some still believe in the old legends, some still fight to restore the old ways, and some will stand against the darkness, in an echo of the High Kings.

Echo of the High Kings Audiobook, Rerelease, and Giveaway

Good morning everyone.  I’m happy to say that progress on the Echo of the High Kings audio book is well underway.  To celebrate the audiobook release, I’m having a new cover produced for the paperback and ebook versions and running something of a contest and giveaway as well as a book bomb.

The book bomb will be timed to coincide with (roughly) the day of the audiobook release on Audible and (hopefully) Amazon.  Since there’s a delay of 3-7 days from when the audiobook is approved to when it goes live, I’m going to arbitrarily set a day now for a book bomb.  That will be the 11th of October.

On to the part that people get excited about: giving stuff away.  I’m going to do a contest as part of the book bomb.  For all reviews written on Echo of the High Kings to verified purchasers, I’ll do an entry into a drawing.  On the 15th of November, I’ll post the winners on my blog, they can then contact me afterward.  Now, for first place, I’m giving away a signed paperback copy of Echo of the High Kings (currently a $28 value).  For second place, I’m giving away an audiobook code (winner’s choice) good for either The Fallen Race or Echo of the High Kings.  Third place, you don’t get a book, but you do get put in a book as a character… no guarantees about survival, of course.  This is a random drawing, so the reviews, good or bad, that win will be the winner, also if there’s no way to identify the particular winner, (IE, no name posted with the review or no one steps forward), I’ll draw for a new winner.  Also, while the book bomb is on the 11th, I’ve no way to tell when a particular reviewer actually bought the book, so I’ll draw from all reviews posted until the 15th of November.   For those of you who take a bit longer, that’s 2 months to do some reading and write up a review.

Thanks everyone for reading and enjoy!
