Kal Spriggs

Kal Spriggs is a writer of science fiction and fantasy stories with over 30 books in print. An avid reader, he started reading J.R.R. Tolkien, Andre Norton, David Eddings, and Robert Heinlein in the 2nd grade and a love of reading and good stories has been constant with him ever since.

Kal is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. He followed in his parents’ footsteps and joined the US Army after graduation and served as an active-duty engineer officer, a reservist, and as an active reservist. He is a combat veteran with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Kal has a master’s degree in environmental engineering and has worked in civil construction and environmental remediation.

His enjoyment for seeing new places has been facilitated by his career choices, and he’s been to over thirty countries. Kal likes hiking, fishing, and skiing, and his favorite places are typically in the mountains of Colorado. His other hobbies include wargaming, tabletop RPGs (both as a DM and player), metalworking, and just about anything else that takes his interest.

A father and husband, Kal and his family live wherever the Army tells him to (he doesn’t often get much choice in the matter) but he thinks of Colorado as home.

  1. Loved the book, Read it all in one day, can’t wait for the next one.
Also loved the space ball references in there. Nice humor when I saw the few references to it and I’d like to think they fit in perfectly. Especially ludicrous speed.

    1. Forgot to log in haha so can’t edit previous post. But liked to say, I’ve added your wordpress to my favorites in the folder of authors who blogs I follow. Will defiantly be looking forward to the next book. Been awhile since I found a sci-fi series that I enjoyed. Though I feel like Lucius got the short end of the stick haha, although the not aging thing might be nice for him if they both can live long enough to enjoy it.

Ok, another thing. Maybe I missed it, but some people in the story really aren’t described at all. What I mean by that, is that they aren’t really described as to give an idea of what they look like. Kandergain is one such character among others. I mean not necessarily need a good description for all the characters, just mainly need them in my opinion for the main people. Im not sure about other people, but I like to picture everything as I read it happening. Though im pretty sure many people do that to.

Though, I’ll also be curious how far into the future the next book will take place in. Is it going to follow after the final battle? Or will it start 5 years in the future since the epilogue took place 5 years in the future. Would kinda miss all the events that happened in between, so personally I hope it doesn’t skip.

Well, that’s enough of my rambling. To sum things up, for the people who don’t want to read all that I wrote. I essentially said, Great book, looking forward to the next, and I’ll be following.

      1. Glad you enjoyed! The next book, The Shattered Empire, takes place only a short time after the events of this one. It will, hopefully, be available in Fall of 2014.

  2. Liked it very much, although the renegades novellas from various POV’s are my favorite bits. Nice to see some good light space opera. Generally well written, nice to have a new universe. Somehow the characterization of the Baron seems a bit flatter and perhaps more static (his situation evolves, not clear that he does) than some of your others.

  3. Will all your stories be multiple novels? Frankly, I try to avoid series that have over three novels. Actually, one is better. I like the stories to end, not go on and in.
    Looking forward to your comments.

    1. I do have several stand-alone novels written, and I’ll be getting them up as I get time to edit/rewrite. I do try to tie most of my novels to a close, but many of my novels tie into a larger universe, and some will be part of a series. As currently plotted, The Fallen Race will be part of a three to four book series. I’m not a fan of 20+ book series, in general. I like my characters to have a story/character arc and to complete that arc. I will, however, have other books and even series which tie into one another.

The novellas are very much a continuing series. While each is a story to itself, I like to expand the general storyline with each one.

  4. Was a lille sceptic at first. But it turns out to be one of the top sf books I have read in a long time. Can’t wait for the next one. You think you can send som of thous shadow lords to pick up a ex and jump back and give me it tomorrow? Good work and I hope you will keep writing more books.

    Regards viktor

  5. I enjoyed reading this novel immensely, even more so than your Renegades novellas which I liked a lot. The book was well written and imaginative – you are definitely a natural born writer. The universe is well developed, as are most of the characters relevant to the storyline. I definitely liked how you controlled the pace of the story – you didn’t make us read through excess detail to show the passage of time, and emphasized the important and fun parts of the plot. I look forward to reading the sequel ad well as Fenris Unchained & Eden Insurrection.

  6. Mr. Spriggs, I’ve been a SF fan for 60 years and believe I can recognize an author destined
to become one of the greats. Keep it up. I’ll be reading as soon as you write.

  7. Enjoyed The Fallen Race so much that when i finished it i immediately purchased books 2 and 3. Ive just finished reading the shattered empire and noticed there was a map of the star systems at the end. My problem is i have the book on my knidle and the text is so small i cant make any of it out, i am also unable to zoom. I was hoping someone could direct me to a larger version of this picture as i would like a copy of it before i start reading the third book, which to be honest im going to start reading tonight.
As i have yet to finish reading this trilogy i dont know if there is going be another book or not but i really hope there will more books set in this fantastic universe.
    Lucius is a BOSS!!

    1. Hi Scott, shoot me your email on my contact page and I can email you a digital copy of that starmap (I’ll also add you to my newsletter list if you’d like). I haven’t posted it to the website yet since I’m having an artist do up a more readable version for Kindle.

  8. Well, I’ve just finished the third Eoriel book and I have to say, simply fantastic read thank you!!! How long till the forth one comes out??? Also, how many will there be in the Saga?

    1. Mark, glad you’re enjoying the read! I’m actually starting on the 4th book now, I hope to have it done in January and published not long after. I’m projecting 12-14 books to finish out the story lines.

    1. Glad you’re liking them, Justin. I’m doing the final edits on book 5 now. This one is a bit longer than the last, but still nowhere near as big a book as The Shattered Empire. Part of that is time, I’ve got far less time to write, part of that is the current story arcs are smaller in scale.

      Thanks for reading!

  9. I can’t find book 3 Hidden Valor, of the Valor series anywhere. I have read 1 & 2 and have 4 but where the hell do I find 3???

  10. In your Book “Vernian Space Gun (Army Space Corps Book 1)” I was wondering why NOAA was called for weather analysis and not the 13th Air Support Operations Squadron which is at Fort Carson?

    1. I figured large-scale weather modeling related to a major event would be more like something NOAA would do. The AF and Army both have weather forecasters, but the atmospheric event following the VSG firing was probably far outside normal parameters. That was my reasoning, but also so I could have a civilian there throwing up their hands and calling people insane.

  11. I just read your Vernian Space Gun. I am very impressed and am waiting impatiently for the sequel. Keep up the good work!

  12. I like your valor and lost valor series but you left them hanging. Will there be another of final book in both series? I am o nly interested those two series. Didn’t care for the others.

    1. Jo Ann, yes, I’ve got another 3 books of the Lost Valor series planned along with more in the main-line series. I’ve been a bit side-tracked by real life at the moment but I’ll have at least one book coming as soon as I can get it edited and ready for publishing. Thanks for reading!
